The primary goal of the tutoring program is to promote the academic excellence of those students who represent James Madison University in athletic competition.  Hard work, dedication, commitment and practice are necessary qualities for athletic and academic success. Tutors are expected to assist the student-athlete and help him or her understand the transfer of these qualities from athletics to academics.  We expect that our student-athletes will come to tutoring sessions prepared with questions/problems and be able to communicate the kind of help needed. Tutoring is not a substitution for class attendance, participation or a professor’s office hours.  Tutors should help student-athletes find answers and should explain the process they use to arrive at the answers.
Â
Tutors are selected to serve based on distinguished academic experience and expertise in the area(s) they will tutor. Â Tutors are required to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and must have received a grade of B+ or higher in any class(es) they are asked to tutor. Â All prospective tutors complete an application which allows them to list courses they feel comfortable and confident in their ability to tutor. Most tutors have previous tutor experience. Â Their knowledge, commitment and professionalism play an important role in their success.
Â
Student-athletes may request a tutor for any class they are taking at any time during the semester.  The program has evolved from helping only those student-athletes who are failing a class to an additional resource for all student-athletes to ensure they are meeting their academic goals and to assist with information that may have been missed due to travel.  Generally, student-athletes and their tutors meet for one hour once a week although multiple meetings per week are permitted when needed. All meetings take place in the Plecker Athletic Performance Center during operating hours. There are six dedicated tutor rooms which are reserved through the Tutor Coordinator’s office.  Staff offices are utilized for tutoring during peak days/times when tutor rooms are not available. Following each session, tutors submit a Tutor Meeting Report to the Tutor Coordinator’s office. The report keeps the student’s Academic Advisor and the Tutor Coordinator informed about the student-athlete’s progress. It allows the tutor to share concerns and positive feedback regarding the student-athlete.
Â
Tutors are provided at no cost to student-athletes. Â If a student-athlete fails to attend a scheduled tutoring session without notifying their tutor in advance, they are charged a monetary fine by the Student-Athlete Services office.
